Question : 'I think I may have a diseased tree' - spider mites.

Question:

I was given a bonsai tree at Christmas and it has developed a sort of webbing around the ends of the branches. It's a Juniper and maybe around two to three years old. I was wondering how I could treat this disease if it is one and if it will infest my other trees if I keep them all near each other like I do now.

Thank you for your time and any assistance you can offer.

Dustin Bishop.

Answer:

You have an insect known as a spider mite. The spider mites will kill your tree - Quickly! Right now take it over to the sink, hold the trunk firmly and wash your tree well, then go out and get yourself an insecticide called 'Pyrethrum', made by 'Shults' - it comes in a yellow bottle with red lettering. Spray well as per directions on the bottle. In another seven to ten days spray again... keep a constant eye on the tree 'till you put it outside in spring. Spider mites are hard to eradicate. You must keep an eye on your tree at all times.

Good luck Dustin.

Dan
