Information on Zelkova.

Question:

Recently I received a bonsai as a gift, it's labeled "Zelkova Schneidria, from the Guangdong province, China".

Is it an outdoor or indoor tree? What's the best way to care for it?

Thank you, David Li..

Answer:

The Zelkova or 'Japanese grey bark elm' is a classical species ideally suited to bonsai. The Zelkova is one of the best deciduous species of tree for bonsai. It is an outdoor bonsai with beautiful silver-grey bark.

You should keep your Zelkova in a sunny position - with only some shelter from strong sunlight and high temperatures. You should also protect the tree from frostbite during the winter.

Zelkova should be watered daily in summer, but about half as much in winter. Never let the rootball dry out. Feed the tree weekly for a month after the buds appear.
