I am debating whether or not to give away some of my Coast Redwood seedlings I grew from seed. These are very small and are just beginning to work on their secondary leaves, so I would wait probably until their first branch to send them off. Do I have any takers?

You do know about these trees and how to care for them, how big they will get, etc. right?

Your climate would not support them though.

What if I did it outside in summer and inside during the winter?

Sorry I do not believe there is a chance of that. They need to be outside where they will get annual rainfall. They would get too big for indoors as well.

I'm in zone 5B in Pennsylvania. Although they don't grow quite as quickly as in warmer coastal climates, I have had no trouble with over-wintering either Coast or Dawn Redwoods when using a cold frame for protection on plants grown out to a few years. I'm also aware of a nearby park that has a few Dawn redwoods growing as landscaping trees that would be about 20-25 years old. They don't attain enormous size because of the cooler weather, but they still do fine.

If there are any more redwoods unspoken for, I would be interested. I was looking into starting my own seedlings this spring.

I would like one if you still have some. I can trade you some red Japanese Maple seedlings if you would like.
