Phillipian Banyan Fig
(Ficus phillipensis)

'The Bonsai Site'

Banyan Fig
Description : Figs are mostly tropical plants naturally growing wild in south-east Asian jungles. Many hundreds of species make up this large tree family. Highly suited to bonsai treatment. The striking aerial roots of the banyan fig are often featured in clasped-to-rock styles.

Age : reportedly approx. 66 years old by seller (created 1934)

Owned : owned by Rick Daugherty, Indiana, US.

Style : Broom

Size : 30"w x 32"h, 12-14" nebari at base

Techniques Used : Rick has recently removed the tree from the mica pot shown in the picture and repotted it into an earthenware pot, so it is now definitely a two-man tree - weighing around 80-100 pounds. It is housed outside during the growing season and is kept indoors under banks of fluorescent lights during the winter months.

Other Comments : Tolerates low light - but likes light. Protect from frost and draughts. Keep inside from minimum 15°C (59°F) to 22°C (71°F).

Place close to a window letting in plenty of light. This plant does not like sudden changes in temperature, nor the sort of draughts which can arise inside living quarters.

Watering must be plentiful during the spring and summer period while the plant is outside. In winter, allow the soil to dry out before watering. Spray the plant often to maintain humidity.

Prune throughout the whole year by cutting back to about two or three leaves. Thin out larger leaves. It is possible to defoliate in spring.

This tree has recently tied second place in a tree-judging competition at the Greater Louisville Bonsai Society's fall (autumn) show and has been exhibited at numerous other shows for the last two years.
