(Juniperus horozontalis)

'The Bonsai Site'

Juniperus horozontalis Description : Junipers are hardy, non-flowering, evergreen conifers with many varieties that are easy to grow, prune and train. They are a rewarding family with responsive, fairly rapid growth.

Creeping Junipers - as this one is - have long, trailing branches with blue-green cast.

Age : Created in 1986

Style : Informal Upright

Techniques Used : Pruning 4-5 years ago which defined branch structure and removed unwanted and obtrusive branches. Tree underwent substantial amount of wiring in the years ahead.

Other Comments : Fertilise in early spring.

Pinch out the tips of new buds any time during the growth period.

Only conduct major pruning during the spring or autumn/fall, but not in summer.

One caution - wear gloves when working with junipers, for the prick of the needles can produce an allergic reaction that causes an itchy red rash which can be very irritating.
