The Bonsai National Arboretum is located in Washington DC. In 1976, for the nation's bicentennial celebrations, the Japanese people (not the government) gave 250 Bonsai to the U.S. as a gift. The collection at the Arboretum has increased over the years to include specimens from collectors and growers in California and Chinese bonsai. The collection even contains tropical plants which are displayed in a special room with tropical conditions (high heat and humidity). The bonsai are a sight to behold. There is one from the Imperial Family, a 125-year old Red Pine that is big enough to require a fork lift to move it. Another is a 350 year-old White Pine. There are many rare and unusual items on display at all times. Click on any of the photos below for a group of photos of each selected style.
